NFL kickers broke the game, and the numbers are absurd

Kicking is the most improved skill in football and it is not close. No position group has moved this far this fast.

The line that makes it real

As recently as 2007, NFL kickers missed more field goal tries than they made from 50 yards and beyond. A 50-yarder was worse than a coin flip.

Today kickers make about 72% of attempts from at least 50 yards — a league record, and nearly double the rate of three decades ago.

It changed how often they try

Volume followed accuracy. In the 1990s a 50-plus yard attempt happened about once every three games. By 2019 that had risen to roughly once every two games. Since then the pace has nearly doubled again.

The field did not shrink. The kickers got good.

Why

The explanation is unglamorous: specialization. Long-distance kicks became far more common as the quality of kickers improved through more training and specialized coaching. Kicking is now a year-round discipline with its own coaches and its own academies, taught to teenagers as a primary skill rather than picked up by whoever on the roster had a strong leg.

What it does to strategy

A reliable 55-yard field goal quietly redraws the field. Offenses that reach midfield are already in scoring range, which changes fourth-down math, two-minute management, and how a defense values a stop at its own 40. The end of a close game now includes an option coaches in the 1990s did not have.

It is also why the improvement has become a rules conversation. When a skill gets good enough to reduce the drama it was meant to create, someone eventually proposes moving something. The extra point already moved once, in 2015, for exactly that reason.
