A Mistaken Whistle Ends An NFL Play On The Spot. The Team With The Ball Picks What Happens Next

When an official blows a whistle by mistake, the ball is dead. Who had the ball, and how, decides whether the down is replayed.

Rule 7, Section 2, Article 1 (o) of the 2026 NFL rulebook says an official shall declare the ball dead when an official sounds the whistle erroneously while the ball is still in play.

Who gets to choose

If the ball is in a player's possession, the team in possession may put the ball in play where it was declared dead or replay the down. If the ball is loose after a fumble, backward pass or illegal forward pass, the team last in possession may take the ball at the spot where possession was lost or replay the down.

If the ball is loose from a legal forward pass, a free kick, a fair catch kick or a scrimmage kick, there is no option. The ball goes back to the previous spot and the down is replayed.

Penalties and the clock

If the down is replayed, all penalties are disregarded except personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct fouls, which are enforced first. The game clock is reset to the time remaining at the snap. If the team does not replay the down, fouls are enforced as normal. When the play is subject to replay review, Rule 15 applies instead, and a clear recovery in the immediate continuing action can still be awarded.
